Distance runner Daniel Tarango might be a freshman but he has proven to be a force on the track at the Texas Tech Open.

The El Paso native stormed past the competition as he ran the 800m for the first time this outdoor season. The freshman clocked in a season-best time of 1:51.58 claiming third place. Tarango’s time secured him the top spot in Conference USA in the event.

The meet showed to be beneficial for a group of El Paso locals, who improved their marks this season.

On the field, Kevin Rincon finished second in the men’s javelin with a toss of 54.62m (179-02). The El Paso native now is ranked eighth in the league after only participating in his second meet in the Orange and Blue.
