New Mexico State head football coach DeWayne Walker announced Tuesday at the team’s weekly press conference that he has shifted defensive play calling responsibilities to linebacker coach Dale Lindsey in an effort to allow him to focus more on the team as a whole.
Walker said he needs to make sure that his voice is heard on both sides of the ball and this will give him the opportunity to continue to build the program in the right direction.
“Over the last year or so I was able to speak on the team as a whole but not be as involved as I would have liked to be,” Walker said. “This is an opportunity for me to give this football team, as a whole, my full attention and not have to worry about calling the defense or defensive schemes. I have full confidence in Coach Lindsey and his ability to develop a solid defensive game plan week in and week out. If I’m going to preach ‘Team’ to our football players, I need to be all about the team and not just the defense. I have to be about the ‘Team’ 24-7.”
The move will allow Coach Walker to better manage the team from an offensive, defensive and special teams approach. Coach Walker will work in conjunction with Lindsey on weekly defensive schemes but the move gives Coach Walker a chance to be a bigger part in offensive and special teams game planning as well as recruiting efforts.
