Walker Pitches Aggies to 4-0 Win
Junior Celisha Walker pitched the Aggies to a 4-0 win over the Weber State Wildcats on day two of the Eller Media Stadium Classic on Saturday, March 2. NM State is 11-7 on the season.
Walker worked her first complete game this season and picked up her first win in the circle with three strikeouts and no runs allowed off three hits. She had a stellar 48 strikes in 53 total pitches in the circle. The Aggies finished the game with four runs on six hits and three stolen bases.
“I thought that Celisha did a great job in the circle,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “Her poise and the defense behind her gave us an opportunity to make some great offensive plays. Amber Olive’s home run really set the tone for us and with every game we play, we are continuing to get better.”
Olive set that tone when she hit a lead-off home run off the second pitch of the game over the left field fence to put NM State on the board. Teresa Conrad got her first hit of the day in the same inning as she singled to short stop.
The second and third inning, the Aggies went down in order, but Kelsey Dodd and Malena Padilla each get base hits in the top of the fourth. Junior pitcher Celisha Walker and the Aggie defense put the Wildcats away in order in the third and fourth innings to put NM State back at the plate.
Senior Tehani Kaaihue reached base on a walk. She put herself in scoring position with her second stolen base this season before freshman Emma Adams brought Kaaihue across the plate with an RBI double to center field.
With the 2-0 lead through four and a half innings, the Aggie defense sat Weber State down in order in the bottom half of the fifth.
The Aggies increased their lead as Dodd reached base on a walk to bring in Chelsea Dohrwardt to pinch run. She picked up a stolen base at second and rounded the bases to score on a throwing error by the Wildcats.
In a similar situation seventh inning, freshman Tatum Reedy singled to center and fellow freshman Brennalyn Nakamura came in as a pinch runner. She stole second and advanced to third on a bad throw. Kaaihue brought Nakamura around the bases with an RBI that went down as a fielder’s choice to give the Aggies the 4-0 win over the Wildcats.
The Aggies face host UNLV later this afternoon in the nightcap of day two of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
