Heading into the third week of preseason workouts, junior Matt Christian has been named the New Mexico State starting quarterback, Coach DeWayne Walker announced after practice Tuesday evening.

Christian, a junior transfer from Palomar Junior College, led the Comets to a Golden Empire Bowl title in 2008 and a Southern California runner-up honor in 2009. During his two seasons in San Marcos, Christian helped the team compile an 18-6 record after starting 11 games; passing for 2,329 yards and 23 touchdowns. In 2009, he was named a J.C. GridWire preseason All-America honorable mention selection, but was later sidelined due to a broken hand midway through the season. A year prior, the San Diego native was selected as a second team All Southern Division selection at quarterback as a redshirt freshman and claimed Player of the Game honors in the 2008 Golden Empire Bowl.

Walker added that freshmen quarterbacks Andrew Manley and Tanner Rust are in a battle to become the primary back-up and that junior signal caller Jeff Fleming will be the Aggies’ change-of-pace quarterback while running special offensive packages.

Lightning and rain caused an hour delay for the beginning of Tuesday’s practice. On a soggy NM State Football Practice Field, the team focused on drills that pitted the offense versus the defense. The team also worked on situational drills including third-down and red zone schemes in addition to individual position drills and special teams.

Fans will get a chance to meet the NM State football team and coaching staff while obtaining autographs this weekend during Football Fan Day in Memorial Stadium. After the conclusion of the Aggies’ scrimmage scheduled for this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., NM State players and coaches will sign posters at tables set up around the field for all Crimson and White faithful. Admission is free to the public.
