Walk-Off single boosts NMSU to 5-4 win over Hornets
Senior Tanner Rust hit a walk-off single in the bottom of ninth to boost the New Mexico State baseball team (19-15, 5-5 WAC) to a 5-4 win over Sacramento State (19-15, 5-5 WAC) at Presley Askew Field, Friday, April 12.
The Aggies had a 4-3 heading into the ninth and Sacramento State tied it up after a batter got on base by being hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a stolen base and reaching third on a wild pitch. The Hornet runner scored on a single through the left side taking the game to 4-4.
Senior reliever Evan Mott was the first pitcher to enter the game in the top of the ninth and tallied two outs before junior Christopher Bradley allowed a walk, a hit and a run. Senior Michael Ormseth came in to get the final out of the top of the ninth on a 1-3 putout and picked up the win. He is now 3-2 on the season.
Starting pitcher Adam Mott threw well in his start working 8.0 innings. He finished the night with eight strikeouts and one walk.
NM State was down 3-0 heading into the sixth inning with senior Parker Hipp posting a sacrifice fly to get his team on the board. The Aggies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh after junior Michael Paulson got on base with a lead-off walk. Freshman Kent Blackstone got on base with a single to right-center that was followed by a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third.
Junior Jory Goldstrom hit a bouncing ball to the third baseman that he could not handle, which allowed two runs to score tying the game at 3-3. Another unearned run scored in the eighth inning when senior Kyle Phillips hammered a shot to leftfield for an RBI. Phillips finished the night going 2-of-4 with an RBI.
With the win NM State moves into a tie with Sacramento State at 5-5 in league play. The Aggies face Sac State, Saturday, April 13 at 6:05 p.m. (MT) on Aggie Vision. Check your local listings for airtimes.
