Varsity soccer fun for Eastlake's first year girls soccer program

Sports

UPDATED: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 - 7:30pm

The Eastlake girls soccer program is the first athletic team to compete at the varsity level at the brand new Eastlake High School in far east El Paso.  The school opened in Fall 2011 with 950 freshman and sophomores.  The girls soccer program had so many try out for the team, that new head coach Gibby Widner decided they had enough for a varsity program.

This season, Eastlake's first, the Falcons are 2-3, and finished third in the Montwood High School Tournament.  With 11 Freshman and 7 Sophomores, Eastlake has taken to the field, competing in District 2-4A.  Most athletic programs will compete at the Varsity level in district next season, but not the Falcons girls soccer team.

Eastlake Head Coach Gibby Widner loves the new players, saying they are soaking up the instruction like sponges.  "It's a great opportunity. There is excitement here at Eastlake high school, we have young kids coming up, freshman and sophomores, being able to build with these young girls. Great athletics students we have here, and they are getting and they are getting an opportunity to play at the highest level of soccer."

Freshman  Karla Parra scored the school's first goal in competition, and already feels like the team is bonding.  "It's like a big opportunity being on varsity at Eastlake, with first year freshman and sophomores."  Freshman Mireille Hernandez added, "It's a little hard because it's a lot faster game, but we're keeping up, and I have a really good feeling about this year."

Friday, January 27, Eastlake will host LPI at 4:00pm.
