Vamoose powers home in $50,000 Curribot Stakes

Vamoose unleashed a powerful move around the far turn to take a commanding 3 and 1/2 length win in the $50,000 Curribot Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

Under a strategic ride from Enrique Gomez, Vamoose took dead aim on the front running pair of Okie Slew and Monterey Jazz and never looked back. The five-year-old gelded son of Petionville swept to the front racing into the home stretch and had plenty of energy in reserve. The 3-2 favorite poured on the pressure and was relentless in his attack for winning trainer Henry Dominguez. The winner finished with a flourish and was never threatened in the final furlong.

Vamoose added the Curribot title to his growing resume of big wins which also include the 2011 Ruidoso Thoroughbred Championship and the Veteran Stakes at Zia Park. He sped through the 1 and 1/16 mile distance in 1:45.71 through some very windy conditions. The winner’s check was worth $30,000 for the Everest Stables of North Oaks, Minnesota. The rapidly improving Vamoose owns 6 wins from 17 starts.

Forest Mouse, also trained by Dominguez, finished with determination to get second under Alejandro Medellin. The former Stakes winner at SunRay Park and Turf Paradise showed plenty of late interest. He edged out Quiet Again by a half length. Quiet Again was the defending champion in the Curribot and coming off a driving win in the Winsham Lad Stakes.

Quiet Again was pestered in the first quarter mile by former Grade 2 stakes winner Monterey Jazz. He lost position down the backstretch but fought valiantly to gain third place. Okie Slew, Behold de Buy and Monterey Jazz rounded out the order of finish.

Dominguez and Gomez swept both stakes races this weekend. The combined forces to take yesterday’s $50,000 El Diario Stakes with the classy mare Twelve Twenty Two. Live racing resumes on Tuesday at 12:25 p.m.
