UTEP senior center Anete Steinberga has been tabbed as the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Steinberga put together back-to-back solid performances to help lead the Miners (14-1, 2-0 C-USA) to a pair of C-USA victories. She averaged 18.5 points – on 50.0 percent shooting (12-of-24)- and 5.0 rebounds in 23.0 minutes in the wins at Tulsa (71-64, Jan. 9) and against East Carolina (81-66, Jan. 13).

The Miners, winners of nine straight, improved to 14-1 overall on the year to equal the best start in program history. They are also off to a 2-0 start in conference play for the second straight year and fifth time overall.

Steinberga started the week off by navigating through foul trouble to tally 18 points and secure three boards in just 18 minutes of action against the Golden Hurricane. She did most of her damage in the second half, scoring 14 points while also grabbing the aforementioned three boards. Overall she drilled 6-of-9 from the floor while also nailing all six of her tries at the charity stripe.

The native of Latvia also had foul issues in the contest against the Pirates but she still delivered a solid stat line. Steinberga poured in 19 points while also pulling down seven boards in 28 minutes of action before fouling out for the first time this season. She hit on 6-of-15 shots, including her first three pointer of the year and second of her career, in addition to going 6-of-6 at the charity stripe.

Steinberga and the rest of the Miners will return to action when they try to set the school standard for best start to a season (15-1) in a nationally-televised match-up against UAB (Fox Sports Net) at the Don Haskins Center at 1 p.m. MST Sunday.
