UTEP's Kimaiyo Wins Pre-Nationals for 2nd Straight Year
Junior Risper Kimaiyo clocked in the top time of the day in the women’s 6K taking first place for the second consecutive year at the 2011 Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Sunday.
“We were very excited that Risper won the meet for the second consecutive year,” head coach Paul Ereng said. “The women’s team could have done better, but Gladys Chepsat suffered an injury and wasn’t able to compete.”
The All-American crossed the finish line with a time of 20:19 claiming her fourth crown of the season.
Kimaiyo led the women to a team finish of 27th amongst 40 of the nation’s top teams. Clocking in second for the Miners was junior Karina Garcia with a time of 22:42. Jackline Ekai recorded a time of 23:24 as the third Miner to complete the race. Kitria Stewart and Laura Delgado came in together to round out the UTEP squad with times of 24:08 and 24:14, respectively.
Elkana Rotich was the top finisher on the UTEP men’s team. The junior finished 14th posting a time of 24:31 to lead the men to a 12th-place team finish amongst 35 teams.
“Rotich and (Justice) Chirchir ran well today,” Ereng said. “The men’s team still has some work to do heading into Conference USA Championships.”
Justice Chirchir followed closely behind setting a season-best with a time of 24:38 to finish 20th. Solomon Gardea recorded a season-best of 25:05 as the third Miner to cross the finish line. Also setting a season-high is Abel Koskey clocking in at 25:26. Juan Blanco and Ramon Garcia completed the race with a time of 27:00 and 28:28, respectively.
The Miners will take two weeks to prepare for Conference USA Championships set for Monday, Oct. 31 in Houston, Texas.
