UTEP's distance medley relay claims title at Drake Relays
The distance medley relay team stormed past the competition at Drake Relays and captured the first title of the second day of competition.
Elkana Rotich kicked of the race for the squad and barley handed off the baton to Abiola Onakoya to give the team the lead. The junior sprinted out and to keep UTEP in the top three. El Paso native Daniel Tarango was the third leg of the relay and made his move to put Anthony Rotich in good position. The sophomore got the baton and was unstoppable. The All-American had a huge lead and helped the team claim the title with a time of 9:44.73. Air Force was second in the race with a time of 9:47.19.
The Miners dominated the 100m hurdles prelims as Janice Jackson and Brianna McGhee finished in the top three. Janice Jackson earned a spot in the finals as she clocked in the fastest time in the first heat of the morning. The Conference USA Champion crossed the finish line with a time of 14.13. Teammate, McGhee also took first in her heat posting a time of 14.14.
The women’s 4x100m relay consisting of McGhee, Yolanda Suggs, Jackson and Magen Del Pino earned a bid to the finals on Saturday set to begin at 3:30 p.m. The squad registered a time of 46.11 finishing eight overall in the prelims.
On the field, Taylor Gunn faced a tough group of competitors in the discus. The sophomore not only registered a personal best but also secured a spot at the NCAA West Preliminary Championship meet. The thrower finished fourth overall with a mark of 52.48m, which ranks her 34th in the nation and fourth in the school recordbook.
Richard Olsson also took the field today in the Orange and Blue. The junior finished the meet with a fourth place finish in the javelin. Olsson advanced to the finals and recorded a toss of 66.11m in his fifth attempt.
Wrapping up the second day of Drake Relays for UTEP was the men’s 4x400m relay (Carnell Horn, A-Shawni Mitchell, Daniel Tarango and Abiola Onakoya). The team went up against 18 squads and raced in the fastest heat of the day. The Miners fell short of making the finals as they clocked in a time of 3:11.26 finishing ninth.
UTEP will have an early morning on Saturday as they kickoff the final day of Drake Relays with the women’s shuttle hurdle relays at 8:20 a.m.
