UPDATED: Sunday, April 27, 2014 - 7:41pm

UTSA scored five runs in the first inning on its way to a 10-0 win in five innings over UTEP on a gusty Senior Day afternoon at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

Seniors Erika Arcuri, Kayla Black, Colleen Hohman, Alanna Leasau and Miraya Montiel played their last game in the Sun City. The five student-athletes were honored prior to game time as their parents accompanied their daughters during the ceremony.

“(The seniors) are a very special group. They’ve done a great job embracing my staff,” first-year head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk said. “They trusted us and made the adjustments when they needed to. It’s been positive working with them.”

All five have made favorable strides so far during the 2014 campaign.

Arcuri is currently hitting a career-best .377, with 18 RBI – more than doubling her total from last year. Black hit a home run on March 8 of this season, her first since 2012, and has tallied 14 RBI after recording six in 2013. Hohman is hitting .327, with 10 home runs and 27 RBI – all career bests. Leasau’s .310 batting average is a step up from her .252 average last season. Montiel is hitting a career-best .298 and blasted her first-collegiate home run – a grand slam at La Tech on March 15.

The Miners (16-32, 8-13 Conference USA) fall one game behind the Roadrunners (22-28, 9-12) in the conference standings as both schools are fighting for the eighth and final spot at the C-USA Tournament on May 8-10 in Boca Raton, Fla.

UTEP will conclude the regular season in a three-game set against East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. next weekend (May 3-4).
