UTEP volleyball held off at Charlotte
El Paso, TX — Senior Xitlali Herrera recorded her eight double-double of the season against Charlotte, but it wasn’t enough as the 49ners defeated the Miners, 3-1 (21-24, 25-23, 28-30, 10-25) on Sunday.
Herrera led UTEP’s attack hammering out a match high 26 kills and posted a .302 hitting percentage against Charlotte. The senior also delivered 14 digs, three block assists and one service ace. Malia Patterson aided the Miners’ offense recording 44 assists.
Charlotte opened the match with an 8-4 lead in the first set. Maintaining their lead the 49ners captured the set as they held UTEP to a -.026 hitting percentage.
Continuing their momentum the 49ners took a 15-11 lead in the second stanza but the Miners slowly chipped it away to tie the score at 23. UTEP would steal the set as a kill by Herrera produced a Charlotte error.
With the match tied at two, the squads fought point for point in the third set as they tied the score eight times. With the score knotted up at 28, Charlotte secured the set with two consecutive kills by Amanda Videmsek and Carly Ochs.
The 49ners would open the fourth set with a 6-0 run. Unable to break Charlotte’s lead, 11 UTEP errors would give the match to the 49ners.
The UTEP volleyball team will continue on the road as it travels to Denton, Texas to face off against UNT on Nov. 10th.
