UTEP volleyball falls at Tulane, 3-1
El Paso, TX — Senior Xitlali Herrera and sophomore Talia Jones registered match-highs, but it wasn’t enough as the Green Wave defeated the Miners, 3-1 (20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25) on Sunday.
UTEP was led by Herrera and Jones, who each had 14 kills. Malia Patterson had a team-high 38 assists.
UTEP (7-6, 1-1 C-USA) recorded eight total net stoppers as the Miners out blocked the Green Wave, but it wasn’t enough as Tulane pounded 59 kills.
Tulane took a two point lead in the first set as a block by Sarah Strasner and Tea Juric capitalized off a UTEP attack error. Both squads went point for point as the Miners kept close behind the Green Wave. A 5-1 run by Tulane gave the Green Wave a 16-11 lead. A kill by Annie Shurtz capitalized off a 5-2 run for Tulane to win the set for the Green Wave.
The Miners took a 5-1 lead in the second set forcing Tulane into a timeout. Relentless Tulane went on an 8-0 run capturing the lead from UTEP. A 4-2 run secured the set second for the Green Wave.
UTEP dominated the third set as they delivered a .400 hitting percentage while holding Tulane at .156. An 8-0 run captured the set for the Miners, 25-16.
The Orange and Blue delivered 17 kills to Tulane’s 13 in the fourth set, but 9 UTEP errors gave the finale set to the Green Wave, 25-22.
The Miners will return to the court Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. (MT) with the first conference home match against Florida Atlantic.
