UTEP volleyball falls at home to UAB
El Paso, TX — The UTEP volleyball team falls to the UAB Blazers, 3-1(25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 20-25) on Friday night at Memorial Gym.
UTEP is now 12-8 overall, and 5-3 in C-USA as UAB moves to 16-9 and 5-4 in league play.
Talia Jones led the Miners with a match high 16 kills and only four errors. The sophomore added six digs and two service aces. Xitlali Herrera followed with 10 kills as Malia Patterson aided the Miner offense with 42 assists.
Both squads went point for point in the first set as the score tied nine times. With the scored tied at 11, a kill by Herrera sparked a 4-0 run for UTEP giving the Miners the lead. The Orange and Blue kept its lead capitalizing off of four UAB errors. A kill by Herrera would capture the set for the Miners.
The close competition carried over into the second set as the scored tied five more times, but at 7-2 run would give the second set to the Blazers tying the match, 1-1.
In the third stanza, the Miners posted a .306 hitting percentage to UAB’s .263 but it wasn’t enough as seven UTEP errors gave the Blazers the set.
UAB found success in the fourth set as it posted 15 kills to UTEP’s 10.
The Miners will return to the court Sunday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. (MT) as they take on the UTSA Roadrunners.
