UTEP volleyball edges Marshall, 3-2
El Paso, TX — Two Miners recorded a double-digit match as the UTEP volleyball team forced a fifth set before pushing past Marshall,3-2 ( 25-20, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11) on Friday night in Huntington, W.Va.
Senior Xitlali Herrera had a match-high 18 kills and 17 digs, while fellow senior Malia Patterson posted her third double-double of the season with 45 assists and 13 digs. Libero Victoria Valencia also secured her second match of the season with over 20 digs.
UTEP is now 13-9 overall, and 6-4 in C-USA as Marshall moves to 14-12 and 7-3 in league play.
Knotted up at six in the first set, UTEP went on a 5-1 run to make the score 11-7. Marshall responded with a 7-2 run bringing the Thundering Herd two points behind the Miners. However, UTEP retained the lead as a 3-0 run captured the first set for Orange and Blue.
A determined Marshall squad would captured the second set as the Thundering Herd held the Miners to a .024 hitting percentage.
Despite UTEP hammering out 15 kills to Marshall’s 13 in the third set, eight Miner errors would give the third set to the Thundering Herd, setting the match, 1-2.
Continuing its momentum Marshall would take an 18-13 lead in the fourth set, but a kill by Madison Morris would spark a 4-0 run for the Miners forcing the Thundering Herd to a timeout.
Coming off the break UTEP would tie the score at 20 with a two kills by Dominique Millette and Talia Jones. A 5-1 run would ultimately capture the fourth set for the Orange and Blue tying the match, 2-2.
Both squads fought point for point in the fifth set as the scored tied eight times. With the score tied at 11 the Miners would steal the set as a kill by Jones ignited a 4-0 for the Miners.
The Miners will remain on the road and travel to Huntington, Charlotte, N.C., to face Charlotte on Sunday.
