UTEP Sweeps Conference USA Men’s Basketball Honors
El Paso, TX — UTEP senior center John Bohannon was named the Conference USA Player of the Week and forward Vince Hunter was selected the C-USA Freshman of the Week on Monday, based on a vote by league media members.
Bohannon was chosen MVP of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso with a pair of double-doubles versus teams that each posted 22 wins and advanced to postseason play a year ago. He averaged 16 points and 13.5 rebounds in the event, shooting 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the field and 70 percent (14-for-20) from the line. He also had five blocks in the two games. Bohannon pulled down 10 rebounds in the second half against Western Illinois. On the Fighting Leathernecks’ last possession in the final 30 seconds, Bohannon blocked a shot and secured a defensive rebound, preserving the Miners’ 65-64 lead in an eventual 67-64 win. He scored 13 points and added nine rebounds in the second half and overtime periods as UTEP outlasted Denver in double OT, 60-54, to claim the tournament title. Earlier in the week, Bohannon played 23 minutes in a 70-55 win over Montana State and contributed five points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Hunter was named the recipient of the Don Haskins Award at the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational after helping the Miners to the tournament title. He averaged 11 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in two tournament games, making 6-of-14 field goals and 10-of-17 foul shots. Earlier in the week, he had six points and four rebounds in 18 minutes of a 70-55 triumph over Montana State.
Bohannon is UTEP’s first Player of the Week honoree this season. Hunter is the second Freshman of the Week pick after Matt Willms was recognized on Nov. 11.
It marks the second time that UTEP has had the C-USA Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week simultaneously. It also happened on Dec. 26, 2011, when Michael Perez was Player of the Week and Cedrick Lang was Freshman of the Week.
