UTEP sophomore named to C-USA preseason team
El Paso, TX — UTEP sophomore midfielder Aleah Davis has been selected to the 2014 Conference USA women’s soccer preseason all-league team, the conference office revealed Tuesday. Additionally, the Miners were predicted to finish fifth out of 14 squads in the regular season as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
The top-eight finishers in conference play will qualify for the 2014 C-USA Women’s Soccer Championships, hosted by Charlotte at Transamerica Field Nov. 5-9. Head coach Kevin Cross understands, though, that preseason polls are fun to talk about but have zero bearing on the outcome on the pitch.
“We do not put too much stock in the beginning of season rankings,” Cross said. “It is the end of year rankings that are important. However, we feel that a fifth-place ranking out of 14 schools shows that Conference USA coaches have respect for the program. We finished in third place last year, so this ranking is in the same ball park. We want to shoot for higher than fifth, though, but it will be very difficult in a highly-competitive conference.”
The Hewitt, Texas, native played a role in the success a year ago, tallying three goals and an assist to tie for fourth on the squad with seven points. She started all 21 matches and logged the fourth-most minutes (1621) of any Miner. She earned placement on the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-Central Region third team, in addition to the All C-USA third team.
Davis’ achievements factored into her placement on the all-preseason squad. Cross appreciates the recognition but is more interested in her play throughout the 2014 campaign.
“It is a great honor for Aleah to be recognized as one of the top-11 players in Conference USA,” Cross said. “Aleah will work hard to be on this list at the end of the season, which is the one that counts.”
