UTEP softball heads to Florida Atlantic
EL Paso, TX — After pulling off a home sweep of Middle Tennessee, UTEP softball will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on Florida Atlantic on April 18-19 at FAU Softball Stadium.
Friday’s doubleheader starts at 4 p.m. MT, while Saturday’s contest is set for 11 a.m.
The Miners (15-27, 7-8 Conference USA), who are in eighth place in the conference standings, kept their post-season hopes alive after the weekend sweep of the Blue Raiders. Conference will take eight of the 13 programs to Boca Raton for the 2014 C-USA Tournament May 8-10.
The Owls (27-21, 9-9) currently stand in sixth place. The Miners control their own destiny as they will complete the home portion of the schedule against seventh-place UTSA (20-23, 7-8) on April 26-27 and will finish the regular season at fifth-place East Carolina (21-17, 10-8) on May 3-4.
East Carolina is on its conference bye weekend, but will play Elon University this weekend. UTSA will take on No. 18 Tulsa during a three-game series in San Antonio, Texas April 18-19.
The Miners are ranked in the top half of the league inmultiple offensive categories – batting average (.305) is ranked No. 3, doubles (58) is ranked No. 4 and runs scored (205) is ranked No. 4.
Erika Arcuri has been consistent at the dish, batting a team-best .385 (52-for-135). The senior is ranked eighth in hitting in the conference, while she only strikes out every 22.5 at bats – ranked No. 2 in conference and No. 42 nationally.
Ashley Eldridge has tallied 17 doubles, ranking tied No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in conference. The junior also leads the Miners in RBI(31), runs scored (28) and stolen bases (seven).
Colleen Hohman leads the team in home runs (eight) andslugging percentage (.653). The senior pitcher/infielder came off a successful weekend where she won two games, notched a save, and hit two two-run home runs in one inning during the sweep of Middle Tennessee.
Kawehiokalani Netane’s bat has been on fire since March 25. The sophomore is batting .450 (9-of-20), with three home runs and 10 RBI during the 10-game span. Netane has tallied four long balls and 18 RBI during the 2014 campaign.

The Owls are hitting .254 as a team, with seven home runs and 155 runs scored. Christina Martinez leads the Owls in hitting (.357) and is tied with Jordan Stovall with a team-best 23 RBI. Shelby Knox has tallied 21 RBI, while Melissa Martinez is pacing the team with two home runs.
In the circle, Samantha Messer (12-7) leads the team in wins and ERA (1.72), while Kylee Hanson is 7-9 with a 1.79 ERA and leads the staff with 83 Ks. Amanda Wilson is 8-4 with a 2.66 ERA. The staff has combined for 205 Ks and only 79 walks.
