UTEP softball adds assistant coach to staff

UTEP softball adds assistant coach to staff
Portland Athletics
UTEP
Wednesday, August 7, 2013 - 2:12pm

New UTEP softball head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk completed her coaching staff by naming Josh Johnson as an assistant on Tuesday.

Johnson will serve as the pitching coach.

“He comes in with a lot of experience and he worked with a really great team last year,” Echo-Hawk said. “Him having that experience will only add to our staff. Not to mention he has the playing background to back it up; so when you do something, you have a better idea how to teach it. He’s going to make a tremendous impact on our pitchers.”

Previously, Johnson served on the coaching staff at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette during the 2013 season. He headed the pitchers for a Ragin’ Cajuns squad that advanced to the Ann Arbor NCAA Super Regionals after winning the Baton Rouge NCAA Regional. His pitchers increased strikeouts by 122 from the previous year, including Jordan Wallace who finished third in the nation with 382 Ks.

“This is a great experience and a great time for me and the staff to create a new culture,” Johnson said. “I’m super excited to work with coach Tobin and coach Cristina (Cobb-Adams) as they’ve had great success and I hope I can bring a lot to the table from my own side. What’s exciting is this is an opportunity and a renewal and hopefully we’ll get it done on the pitching side of things and every side of things.”

The 2000 graduate of University of Wisconsin-Stout was a four-year letter winner in baseball and named first team All-Conference at third base during the 1998 season. Johnson has played fast pitch softball since 1995 and currently pitches and plays outfield for the United States Men’s National Team. He was named to the NAFA All-World Team 16 times and was a 2013 NAFA Hall of Fame inductee.

The native of Oregon, Wis. received a Master of Science in Applied Psychology from Wisconsin-Stout. Johnson also served as head coach for Faulkner State Community College during the 2010-12 seasons and compiled a 119-60 overall record (most wins in school history).
