UPDATED: Thursday, August 1, 2013 - 5:29pm

The UTEP quarterback battle reduced by one Thursday with the announcement that Senior quarterback Carson Meger was leaving the program. Meger told UTEP officials it was a personal decision to forgo his final year of eligibility and return to the Dallas area to pursue a coaching career.

The Plano, Texas native graduated in May with a degree in Communications so his departure will not affect the schools Academic Progress Report.

Head Coach Sean Kugler released a statement saying, “Carson (Meger) has already graduated and has a great opportunity to go into coaching, which is what he wants to do, and we support him fully and wish him the best of luck.”

Meger appeared in 17 games in three seasons at UTEP starting in three contests. For his career he through for 1,183 yards with three touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Four quarterbacks remain on the roster with Texas A&M junior transfer Jameill Showers at the top of the depth chart followed by sophomore Blaire Sullivan, redshirt freshman Garrett Simpson, and true freshman Mack Leftwich.

The Miners report for camp August 7th and leave August 8th for the two week camp in Alpine, Texas. UTEP opens their season September 7th against New Mexico at the Sun Bowl.
