UPDATED: Tuesday, June 24, 2014 - 11:06pm

El Paso is not known for it's basketball pipeline to the Motor City, but UTEP snagged a big prize in the incoming Freshman class. Detroit native Mar'Qywell Jackson rated a four-star recruit by Rivals, averaging 26 and 24 points per game his junior and senior year respectively.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard played for the Detroit Stars AAU team, where he was a teammate of the Miners’ Vince Hunter and Matt Willms. Jackson says the reason he chose UTEP was his relationship with his former teammates.

"It's real comfortable. When I first got here, I thought I was back at high school because I already had a good relationship with some of the players," said Jackson. "I love to shoot. I can get into other players heads, mindset as you know. Get them off their game."

“Marqywell has great length for a perimeter player,” UTEP coach Tim Floyd said. “He is very good in the open floor. He has really good upside. He has the ability to be a good defender. He can really, really score. I think he’s a guy that can really shoot it and come off pindowns, which is something we need moving forward. He really rebounded it well from the guard spot as a senior.”
