UTEP forward named Conference USA Player of the Week
El Paso, TX — Senior Kayla Thornton has been named the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The El Paso native averaged 23.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks to help Miners (15-4, 4-2 C-USA) pick up two wins. It marks the third weekly honor on the year for Thornton & the fourth such distinction of her career.
She started the week off with 26 points, including 20 points in the second half alone, to help fuel UTEP’s school-record 23 point comeback in an eventual 86-85 triumph in OT against Southern Miss on Jan. 22. Thornton also accounted for the game-winning point on a free throw with nine seconds to play before making a steal to seal the biggest from-behind win in school history.
She followed that up by posting her 10th double-double on the year with 21 points & 16 rebounds in the road victory at UTSA on Jan. 27.
Thornton and the rest of the Miners will return to action when they play host to Marshall at 7:05 p.m. MST Wednesday. Tickets are only $5 for adults or $3 for kids. Fans are also encourage to attend the Keitha Adams show (5-6 p.m. Tortuga Sports Lounge on Thursday).
