USC's Andy Enfield disses Tim Floyd, El Paso

UPDATED: Friday, November 22, 2013 - 10:31pm

New USC head basketball coach Andy Enfield did not pull any punches when speaking to boosters recently taking jabs at former Trojans and current UTEP coach Tim Floyd.

Enfield was quoted in Men's Journal responding to boosters who asked about a confrontation with Floyd this summer over former Miner signee Isaac Hamilton. The UTEP coach accused Enfield of tampering with the five-star guard and threatened NCAA infractions involvement. The Trojans coach had a pointed and direct response:

"Tim Floyd shows up every day at work and realizes he lives in El Paso, Texas," said Enfield. "And he's pissed off that he didn't get the USC job two months ago. I told him, 'Tim, if I could have all this power to somehow convince a family to do this, why the heck didn't the kid come last spring, when I first got the job?'"

Coach Floyd interviewed for the vacant USC job when the position after the school fired Kevin O'Neill but ultimately turned it down to stay at UTEP.

NewsChannel 9 spoke with Floyd and asked if he had a reaction to Enfield's statements, he said he had no comment.

Enfield did not stop there taking jabs at new UCLA and former New Mexico head coach Steve Alford:

"I don't worry about them," said Enfield with a smile. "I've made it to one Sweet Sixteen in two years, and he's made it to one Sweet Sixteen in 18 years."

The 44-year old Enfield was hired to lead the Trojans last spring after leading Florida Gulf Coast University on a Cinderella run in the NCAA Tournament with improbable upsets over Georgetown and San Diego State.

USC is 4-1 so far this season with a 78-68 loss in Enfield's debut at Utah State being the lone blemish.

UTEP and USC could potentially meet this season as both are in the field for the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament next week in the Bahamas. The Miners open the tournament against Tennessee Nov. 29 in the first round and will play either Xavier or Iowa in the second round.
