Southern Miss Defeats UTEP, 11-7

UPDATED: Sunday, March 9, 2014 - 11:29pm

The UTEP softball team scored four runs in the fifth inning and two more in thesixth, but it wasn’t enough as Southern Miss piled on seven runs in the top of the fifth inning on its way to an 11-7 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

“It’s hard to comeback after an inning like that,” head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk said. “It was nice to see us show a little fight at the end and put the pressure on them. We came up with some timely hits and Sam (Alvillar) did a nice job of getting back in the lineup. We need to do a better job at being consistent throughout the game.”

Samantha Alvillar returned to the UTEP lineup after missing the last eight games. The junior infielder went 2-for-4 and two runs scored in her return.

During the fifth inning, the Miners (8-16, 1-2 Conference USA) took advantage of a few Golden Eagles (8-13, 2-1 C-USA) errors, placing Alvillar, Tahla Wade and Erika Arcuri on base. Ashley Eldridge grounded out the second baseman, but scored Alvillar. Alanna Leasau reached second on an error by the centerfielder that plated Wade and Arcuri. Kayla Black got on first base with a single to leftfield, following Colleen Hohman’s sac-fly that scored Leasau. The rally ended on a groundout to third base, but closing the gap, 11-5.

Wade drove in Montiel across the dish, and Leasau hit a sac-fly to left that scored Wade, but that was all the Miners could dish up.

Southern Miss was led by Sarah Evan’s first-career home run, a three-run shot to left centerfield in the fourth inning, and Samantha Robles belting a grand slam to center field during the big fifth inning.

The Miners will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to take on rival New Mexico on Tuesday, March 11. The doubleheader will start at 12 p.m. MT.
