The UTEP track and field team dominated the second day of competition at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational

The UTEP track and field team dominated the second day of competition at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational at the Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday.

Junior Anthony Rotich claimed his third collegiate crown of the indoor season in the mile run. The All-American registered a personal best time of 4:01.11 ranking him No.1 in the nation after altitude conversions with a mark of 3:55.86.

On the field, Mark Jackson also garnered national recognition as he posted a personal best of 16.21m (53-02,25) in the triple jump. The senior’s performance ranks him No.3 in the nation and eighth in program history.

The men’s 4x400m added to the Miners’ success as they finished second with a time of 3:12.27. The squad consisted of Carnell Horn, A-Shawni Mitchell, James Bias and Abiola Onakoya. The relay team currently sits at No. 32 in the nation.

Garnering national recognition for the women was Janice Jackson as she dominated the 60m hurdles posting the fastest time in the prelims with a mark of 8:22. The senior never looked back in the 60m hurdles finals and took gold with a personal best time of 8.09. The time not only earned the sprinter the No. 4 spot in the nation but also No. 1 spot in program history.

On the field, the Orange and Blue was represented by Nickevea Wilson who placed second in the triple jump with a finish of 12.89m (42-03.50) in the triple jump. Wilson’s time currently ranks sixth in the nation.

The track and field will have two weeks to prepare for the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas on February 8th.
