Nash named Conference USA Sixth Player of the Year
El Paso, TX — Redshirt-sophomore guard Jenzel Nash has been named the 2014 Conference USA Women’s Basketball Sixth Player of the Year, the league office revealed Monday afternoon. It marks the third time in the past four years that the Miners have secured the award, with former standout Gloria Brown being so recognized in 2011 and 2012.
Nash came off the bench for 25 of her 27 games played on the year, and provided a huge spark with 11.9 points per game to rank second on the squad. She reached double figures in scoring in 16 contests while dishing out three or more assists 11 times.
“Jenzel has taken the role of being a player that gives us energy and a boost,” UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. “Her and I talked about how important role it is to be that sixth player that brings a spark to the team. She has done a great job of doing this. I am very proud of her.”
She has had several big games, including pouring in a season-high and the second-most points of her career (24) against Tulsa (1/11/14). The Houston native also had a campaign-best seven rebounds in the game while setting a career-best with 11 field goals made. The contest came as part of a scoring surge in which she reached double figures in scoring in 10 of 12 tilts.
Nash is an athletic guard who can seemingly get to the rim at will despite her 5-7 stature. She ranked second on the team in both free throws made (84) and attempted (114) on the year. She also got after it defensively, recording at least two thefts in 12 contests.
She has been active on the offensive glass with 40 of her 103 rebounds coming at that end.
She started the season-opening game against UTPB (11/8/13) and then again at North Texas (2/19/14) while coming off the bench of the rest of the year. Overall she is logging 22.1 minutes per game.
The 2014 C-USA Women’s Basketball Championships will be from Tuesday through Saturday in El Paso. UTEP, which received a double-bye as result of its finishing third in league play, will square off against either Louisiana Tech, North Texas or Charlotte in the quarterfinals of the event at 5 p.m. MDT inside historic Memorial Gym on Thursday.
