Miners volleyball team picks up win
El Paso, TX — In its final match at the Art Carmichael Invitational the UTEP volleyball team pushed past University of Massachusetts-Lowell in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-19) victory.
UTEP took control of the first set, 7-4 three kills by Talia Jones, Madison Morris, and Malia Patterson capitalized off of four River Hawk errors.
UMass-Lowell stayed on the Miners’ toes narrowing UTEP’s lead to one with a score of 8-7,
A UTEP error and a kill by Carolyn Eddy gave the River Hawks took 10-8 lead.
The Miners responded with 4-0 run as back to back kills by Patterson and Herrera give UTEP a 13-11 edge, forcing UMass-Lowell to call a timeout.
The Orange and Blue maintained its edge as consecutive kills by Jones and Morris push the Miners to a 16-13 lead.
UTEP’s offensive attack over powered the UMass-Lowell’s defense as the Miners delivered a 5-0 run setting the score to 23-18. Consecutive kills by Jones and Morris capture the first set for the Miners 25-19.
Much like the first set, UTEP took control of the second set, as a River Hawk error sparked a 3-0 run from the Miners with two kills by Herrera and Morris setting the score 3-0.
UTEP increased its lead to 10-5 with a 5-0 run fueled by Lindsey Larson who hammered out back to back kills.
The Miners held the UMass-Lowell’s offense as they went on a 6-0 run bringing the score to 15-8.
Consecutive kills secured by Herrera increased UTEP’s edge to 20-9 forcing the River Hawks into a timeout. Off the timeout Herrera hammered three consecutive kills forcing UMass into a second timeout (23-9).
The Orange and Blue secures the second set off a UMass service error setting the score, 25-12.
Continuing their momentum the Miners took control of the third set with a 7-4 lead coming off of consecutive kills by Herrera.
Keeping up with the Miner tempo, the River Hawks went on a 4-0 run as a kill by Anisa Smith and a service ace by Olivia Parkins tie the set 12-12.
Relentless the Miners respond with a 3-0 run of their own, as Herrera hammers outs three consecutive kills giving UTEP a 17-14 advantage.
Refocused the Orange and Blue extended its lead with a 5-0 run putting the score, 23-18.
After a UMass-Lowell service error, Jones delivers her ?kill to secure the final set for the Miners 25-19.
The Miners will return home to cohost the UTEP/NMSU Invitational as the Orange and Blue faces off against South Dakota State at 7 p.m. (MT) Friday, and Hampton University at 2 p.m. Saturday
