Miners qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships

UTEP Miners Janice Jackson, Nickevea Wilson, Mark Jackson and Anthony Rotich will represent the track and field team at the 2014 NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Taking the track first for the Miners is hurdler Janice Jackson. The senior will be making her second appearance at the NCAA meet after clocking in an impressive time of 8.11 in the 60m hurdles at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational, which ranks her ninth nationally and first in school history. The last time the hurdler took the track she garnered two gold and one bronze medal at the C-USA Championship.

Jackson is set to take the track in the 60m hurdles semifinals on Friday at 6:45 p.m. (MT).

On the field, Nickevea Wilson will make her first appearance at the NCAA Champions in the triple jump on Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT).

The sophomore registered three first place finishes this season in the triple jump

Captured gold every time she competed in the triple jump including at the Texas A&M Invitational earning C-USA Athlete of the Week honors. She went on to earn a crown at the C-USA Championship in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 13.13m (43-01) in the triple jump.

On the men’s side, Mark Jackson will compete in the triple jump on Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT). The senior ranks No. 5 in the nation in the triple jump with a leap of 16.21m (53-2.25) and No. 24 in the long jump with a mark of 7.61m (24-11.75). The senior earned Co-C-USA High Scorer of the Meet as he secured three C-USA titles in the long jump, triple jump and 60m guiding the men’s team to a conference title/

Distance runner Anthony Rotich, is currently one of two distance runners on the Bowerman Watch List. The junior ranks in the top-25 nationally in the mile (2nd), 5,000m (12th) and 3,000m (25th). The junior clocked in a time of 3:55.86A at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational finishing first overall. His time garnered the Kenyan native C-USA Athlete of the Week honors. Rotich went on to claim three titles at the C-USA Championships helping the men’s team secure the team title. He was named the Co-C-USA High Scorer of the Meet after scoring 30 points for the Miners. He will contest the mile on Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT).

ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 14 starting at 7:55 p.m. (ET) and March 15 starting at 7:50 p.m.
