Miners Pull Out Brooms, Sweeps La Tech
El Paso, TX — Alanna Leasau belted a two-run double to center field, giving the UTEP softball team its first lead, 9-7, and eventual victory. The Miners rallied to score six runs in the seventh inning after being down 7-3. It was the first-ever conference three-game road sweep in program history on Sunday afternoon at Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The Miners’ (12-17, 4-2 Conference USA) magical seventh inning started with a Danielle Pearson single to second base, a Miraya Montiel bunt, while Samantha Alvillar reached first base on an error to load the bases. Tahla Wade tried to bunt Pearson home, but was thrown out by the third baseman for the first out.
But Erika Arcuri would make sure her teammates would cross the dish.
Arcuri singled to left center that plated Montiel and Alvillar. The bases would load again when a pitch hit Ashley Eldridge. Colleen Hohman, who hit her fifth home run of the season in the second inning for UTEP’s first run, would pop out to the short stop for out number two.
With the score 7-5 and two outs, the squad would not fold, but capitalize on Lady Techsters’ errors.
Kawehiokalani Netane hit a ball that would have ended the game, but an error by the first baseman kept UTEP’s pulse alive. On that miscue, Arcuri and Wade both raced across home plate, tying the contest.
Hohman (3-2), who was inserted as a pitcher from first base in the fourth inning, closed the game out and earned her second consecutive win in as many days.
The weekend conference sweep was also the first since April 2 and 3, 2010 when the Miners took three from Southern Miss in El Paso.
Besides the seventh inning rally, with the score 6-1, the Miners were able to tack on two runs in the sixth inning. Arcuri bunted Wade home, and Netane singled in Arucri.
Aruri went 3-for-4, with three RBI and two runs scored. She upped her team-leading average to .394 and is ranked second on the team with 11 multiple hit games. Her three-hit performance was the second of the season.Wade was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Pearson was 2-for-2 on the day.
The Miners will take two days off and return to practice on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
The Lady Techsters (8-18, 0-6 C-USA) remain winless inconference in 2014.
UTEP will return to the Sun City to take on North Texas (19-8, 5-1 C-USA) in a three-game series starting with a Friday (March 21) doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. MT.
