Miners to open season at Lobo Collegiate

El Paso, TX — The UTEP track and field team will open the 2014 indoor season at the Lobo Collegiate Open on Saturday.
The men’s team is led by letterwinners Anthony Rotich, Mark Jackson, Daniel Tarango and freshman Cosmas Boit.
After capturing a consecutive crown at the C-USA Cross Country Championships, Rotich enters his third season in the Orange and Blue. Last season, the junior ranked fifth in the nation in the 5,000m run with a time of 13:38.58 registered at the Husky Classic. Rotich went on to set gold medal finishes at the C-USA Championships in the 3,000m and 5,000m and two silver finishes, garnering him the league’s High Scorer of the Meet and the Performer of the Meet. The distance runner rounded out the indoor season competing in the 3,000m and 5,000m at the NCAA Championship. He clocked in a sixth place finish in the 5,000m at the national meet earning All-American honors. Rotich will be competing in the 1 mile run along side Cosmas Boit at 1:15 p.m.
Boit will be making his debut on the track after running a successful cross country season where he claimed three silver finishes throughout the season. The freshman wrapped up the season with a bronze medal at the C-USA Championships, which garnered him, the Freshman of the Meet honors.
On the sprints side Mark Jackson returns to the track after qualifying for the C-USA Championship finals in the 60m dash with a personal best of 6.72 before sustaining an injury. Jackson will compete in the 60m dash prelims at 12:50 p.m.
Also returning for the Miners is El Paso Native Daniel Tarango. Last season, the sophomore guided the 4x400m relay team to four top-five performances including a season best of 3:13.83 at the Texas A&M Invitational and a gold medal finish at the C-USA Championships. Tarango is set to compete in the 600m run side at 12:00 p.m.
Leading the women is Janice Jackson as she comes off a stellar 2013 campaign. The junior broke her own school record as she registered the fastest time in school history in the 60m hurdles with a personal best time of 8.17 posted at the C-USA Indoor Championships. The sprinter carried her success to the outdoor season as she clocked in a time of 13.06 in the 100m hurdles, which not only garnered her All-American honors but also the second-fastest time in the UTEP recordbooks only behind UTEP Hall of Famer Kim Turner (12.95). She will be taking the track Saturday in the 60m hurdles prelims at 12:40 p.m. and again at 3:10 p.m. for the 200m dash.
Also competing for the Miners in the 60m prelims is Jallycia Pearson. Last year, the junior placed sixth in the pentathlon in the C-USA Championships earning top-three finishes in the 60m hurdles (8.78) and in the shot put (11.35m). Pearson will also compete in the high jump at 10:00 a.m.
Rounding out the field events for the Miners are Taylor Gunn who is competing in the weight throw at 10:00am and Nickevea Wilson who is set to compete in the long jump at 12:00 p.m.
