El Paso, TX — The UTEP football team opened up their 2014-15 preseason practice today at the Sun Bowl. The Miners are coming off a 2-10 season in head coach Sean Kugler's first season last year. The Miners suffered injuries last season, coupled with little depth and new defensive schemes, made it a very LONG season. The coaches and players have already implemented new schemes to both the offense and defense which should change things up.
"You know, we're not going to stand pat... We're not going to expect to do the same things and expect success, there are things that we did not do well last year and we need to get better at, and we're implementing new things that fit our personnel," said UTEP coach Sean Kugler.
Senior receiver Ian Hamilton said, "We are going to try to move the ball a lot more down the field, we weren't necessarily taking the chances we needed to, and so we are going to this year." Senior quarterback Jameill Showers added, "We have run plays in but we can give the signals outside, so if they bring the safeties up with an extra guy in the box, we can pick it up and throw it, so that's always good to hear as a quarterback."
News and notes: Senior OL Kyle Brown will miss this season due to a blod clot in his lung. UTEP has petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibilty for Brown. The Miners leave for Camp Alpine on Tuesday afternoon.
