Miners lose a guard, Aggies prep for Bakersfield, and UTEP women get defensive
El Paso, TX — UTEP Men's Basketball head coach Tim Floyd announced today that junior walk on guard Victor Mbachu is academically ineligible for the remainder of the season. The UTEP men (14-6, 4-1 C-USA) takes on Conference USA leader Louisiana Tech (17-4, 5-1 C-USA) on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
Both teams have won nine of their last 10 games. UTEP is tied with Southern Miss for the longest active winning streak among league squads at four games.
UTEP is a half-game behind Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss, who are tied for first place in C-USA. Southern Miss is idle on Thursday.
UTEP is in pursuit of a fifth straight C-USA win, which would tie its second-longest string of victories since joining the league for the 2005-06 season.
UTEP is seeking its first five-game Conference USA win streak since January of 2006 when it toppled SMU, East Carolina, Tulane, Marshall and SMU (again) in succession.
UTEP is 4-1 in Conference USA play. The Miners have won at least four of their first five league games for the sixth time in nine years as a C-USA member (2005-06, 2006-07, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13 and 2013-14). The Miners started 5-1 or better through six games in 2005-06 (5-1), 2009-10 (5-1) and 2010-11 (5-1).
