Miners head to C-USA track and field championships

The UTEP track and field team is prepared to take on the competition at the 2014 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday.

The Miners are strong then ever and return to Birmingham, Ala. with reinforcement this season. The men’s squad comes into the championships ranked sixteenth in the national, and is the only C-USA school to be ranked in the top 25 nationally.

Returning to the track this season is Anthony Rotich, who finished first in the men’s 5,000m clocking in a time of 14:17.43 at the 2013 C-USA Championships. This season, Rotich has continued to dominate the track clocking in the second-fastest time in the nation in the mile run according to the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) with a time of 4:01.11 recorded at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational.

Rotich not only excels in one event, but also ranks 11th in the nation in the men’s 5,000m run. The All-American has not slowed down for a second as he clocked in a time 13:44.13 in the 5,000m run at the UW Husky Classic. The junior will kick off the running events on Friday with the 5,000m run at 3:25 p.m. (MT). Rotich will return to the track on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. (MT) and 2:50 p.m. (MT) for the mile and the 3,000m run.

Also highlighting the distance squad is Cosmas Boit. The freshman currently ranks second in C-USA in the mile run with a personal best time of 4:04.39 registered at the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. Boit will be competing in the distance medley relay on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (MT), and the mile run and 3,000, run on Saturday.

Leading the sprinters will be Abiola Onakoya. The senior is ranked third in league with an altitude time of 47.54 in the 400m dash recorded at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational. Onakoya will take the track on Friday for the 400m dash at 4:40 p.m. (MT) and the 200m dash at 6:55 p.m. (MT).

Returning for his final season as a Miner is All-American Mark Jackson. The senior currently sits in No. 4 spot in the national in the triple jump with a mark of 16.21m (53-2.25) posted at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational. The jumper also garnered national recognition in the long jump as he registered a new meet record of 7.61m (24-11.75) at the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. His performance ranks him 20th in the nation. Jackson is set to compete in the long jump and 60m dash on Friday at 5: 30 p.m. (MT) and 6:15 p.m. (MT), and the triple jump on Saturday at 10 a.m. (MT).

On the women’s side, Janice Jackson has picked up where she left off last season. She has earned three first-place finishes in all of the Miners meets, and two C-USA Athlete of the Week honors thus far. The senior is ranked sixth in the nation and first in C-USA in the 60m hurdles with an altitude time of 8.11 posted at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational. Her time is the fastest in the program history.

The All-American will be competing in the 60m hurdles on Friday at 5:45 p.m. (MT) and the 200m dash at 6:40 p.m. (MT). On Saturday, Jackson will lead the women’s 4x400m relay at 3:15 p.m. (MT).

On the field, Nickevea Wilson has set the bar high for the 2014 season. The sophomore is ranked 16th in the nation in the triple jump with a leap of 12.89m (42-3.5) recorded at the UNM Cherry & Silver Invitational. Her performance has also earned her the No. 2 spot in the league. She will be taking the field in the long jump on Friday at 3 p.m. (MT) and triple jump on Saturday at 1 p.m. (MT).
