El Paso, TX — The New Mexico State softball team fell 5-1 to I-10 rival UTEP (7-14) on Tuesday, March 4, snapping the Miners seven game losing streak to NMSU. The Aggies gathered six hits on the game, but drop the first game to the Miners since 2010. NM State moves to 13-8 on the season.
Junior Kelsey Dodd went 2-for-3 on the game with a pair of singles, while the Aggies lone run came off the bat of reigning WAC Hitter of the Week Staci Rodriguez,
In the circle, redshirt sophomore Karysta Donisthorpe worked three innings and took the loss, walking four with four strikeouts. Senior Celisha Walker came in in the top of the fourth to pitch four straight strikeouts and finish the game with five.
UTEP got on the board first after Donisthorpe walked in the first Miner run off three straight walks and a hit by pitch. The second run crossed the plate with an infield single. The third run for UTEP came across in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple after a single to third got the runner on base.
NM State picked up a hit in each of the innings on Tuesday but was unable to turn a run, leaving seven stranded in the game. UTEP sent the Aggies away in order in just the fifth.
It wasn’t until the top of the sixth that NM State found its first fun of the game. The eighth home run of the season for junior Staci Rodriguez was a solo shot over center field to get NM State on the board.
UTEP scored two more in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of Aggie errors that scored the first. The second run of the inning came off a pair of fielder’s choice plays and a single RBI in shallow left field to score the runner from third.
The Aggies made a final attempt in the top of the seventh, but fell short with a base hit and a pair of fielder’s choice hits to leave runners on first and second before the final out.
