Miners to Close Regular Season at East Carolina

The UTEP softball team will close out the 2014 regular season when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina in a three-game series (May 3-4) at ECU Softball Stadium.

Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 11 a.m. MT, while Sunday’s final game is a 10 a.m. start.

The 11th-place Miners (16-32, 8-13 Conference USA) are looking to earn a bid at the C-USA Tournament in Boca Raton on May 8-10. The top eight spots will advance to postseason play.

The Pirates (25-18, 12-9) are in sixth place, followed by seventh-place Southern Miss (22-28, 10-11) and eighth-place Marshall (23-30, 10-11).

Ninth-place Charlotte (20-26, 10-13) and 10th-place UTSA (22-28, 9-12) also stand in the way of the Miners.

Marshall will play host to La Tech (19-30, 7-13), Southern Miss hosts FIU (30-19, 12-9), while UAB (29-23, 13-7) plays at UTSA. All games this weekend are a three-game series. Charlotte has completed its conference schedule.

Miners by the Numbers
Erika Arcuri is ranked sixth in the conference with a .377 (58-for-154) batting average. The senior is also one of the toughest to strikeout, only whiffing eight times this season. The center fielder has also been clutch on defense, not committing an error this season.

Ashley Eldridge is hitting .331 (49-for-148). The junior leads the Miners in RBI (34), runs scored (31) and is one of the national leaders in doubles (17).

Colleen Hohman leads the team with 10 home runs and has tallied 27 RBI, while hitting .327 (36-for-110) on the season. The senior has also won five games in the circle and leads the pitching staff with 52 Ks.

Kawehiokalani Netane has had the hot bat, hitting .349 (15-for-43) with four home runs and 14 RBI during the last 16 games. The sophomore has hit five long balls and recorded 22 RBI.

Series vs. East Carolina
UTEP is 4-21 all time against East Carolina, including losing the last 12 meetings. The Miners last defeated the Pirates on May 7, 2009, a 4-3 win at the C-USA Tournament in El Paso.

In the last meeting, the Pirates upended the Miners 8-0 on March 30, 2013 at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

Scouting East Carolina
The Pirates defeated La Tech two out of three games last weekend. East Carolina is ranked second in the league in hitting (.308), third in home runs (42), second in stolen bases (83) and has scored 233 runs.

Shelby Johnson is ranked No. 10 in conference with a .361 (48-for-133) batting average, while her 31 stolen bases is second most in the league. Kristi Oshiro is right behind Johnson with a .360 (45-for-125) average. Oshiro has tallied 30 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Jordan Lewis is hitting .340 (35-for-103) and leads the squad in home runs (11) and RBI (39). Alex Fieldhouse has recorded 36 RBI and eight home runs.

In the circle, Sarah Christian (16-8) leads the staff in wins, ERA (2.84), innings pitched (162.2) and strikeouts (110). Caroline Umphlett (8-5) is second in ERA (3.99), innings (79.0) and strikeouts (46).
