UPDATED: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 - 4:43pm

UTEP football’s Nathan Jeffery was one of 35 candidates named to the first-annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, which was announced at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kickoff Luncheon on Wednesday.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

Last season, Jeffery paced the team in rushing yards (897), rushing touchdowns (seven), yards per game (81.5), including a season-long 71-yard dash. The junior ranked sixth in Conference USA in yards per game and registered three consecutive contests with multiple touchdowns – all against C-USA opponents. Jeffery also rushed for a career-high 177 yards against nationally ranked Oklahoma to open the 2012 season.

The nominee must meet one of more of the following criteria: born is Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

The Watch List will be narrowed to up to 16 finalists in November and then up to four finalists in December. The finalists will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and (in the future) former winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler, Texas for an awards banquet scheduled for January 10, 2014.
