Herrera named Senior CLASS award candidate
El Paso, TX — Senior Xitlali Herrera was selected today as one of the 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate volleyball.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
The senior is the only Conference USA student-athlete to make the prestigious list. Herrera has a cumulative grade point average of 3.81 and is majoring in International Business. She is a two time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and is the fourth Miner in program history to earn C-USA All-Academic honors.
On the court, Herrera not only is a team leader, but she is one of the only individuals in college volleyball that is a middle blocker and plays all-six rotations for the Miners. The Juarez, Mexico native became the second Miner in program history to earn a spot in the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention team and be named to the ANCA All-Midwest Region first team. In only her second season on the team, she received her second consecutive All-Conference USA first team honor.
The middle blocker led the team in hitting percentage (.300) and guided UTEP to rank No. 62 in the nation and first in conference with a.236 hitting efficiency. The senior rated second on the squad last season in kills (333), digs (290), blocks (101) and aces (20). During her 2012 campaign, she registered 10 double-doubles, including an impressive 17 kills and 15 digs versus Tulsa (10/12) where she led the squad’s defense and offense. Herrera wrapped up the season totaling 10 or more kills in 19 matches and 10 or more digs in 15 matches.
Of the 30 candidates, 10 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher and 19 are American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December.
