Former Miner smashes Commonwealth Games 100M record

KTSM
UTEP

POSTED: Tuesday, July 29, 2014 - 2:18pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, July 29, 2014 - 2:51pm

UTEP Track and Field alum Blessing Okagbare commanded the track as she secured Nigeria its first Athletics gold medal of the XX Commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 28.

The former NCAA Champion competed in the 100m dash. She was the only athlete to go under 11 seconds, clocking in at 10.85. Her performance not only garnered the crown but also broke the 12-year record of 10.91 set by Bahamas’ Debbie Ferguson in Manchester 2002.

The Olympic bronze-medalist became only the second African to win the women’s 100m title since Mary Onyali-Omagbemi in 1994.

Okagbare is set to return to the track for the 200m semi-finals on Thursday and the 4x100m relay on Friday.
