Aggies slip past Miners in volleyball

KTSM
UTEP

POSTED: Tuesday, November 12, 2013 - 11:41pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, November 12, 2013 - 11:52pm

Seniors Xitlali Herrera and Malia Patterson both recorded double-doubles against rival NM State, but it wasn’t enough as the Miners fell to the Aggies, 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 19-25).

In the 2013 edition of the Battle of the I-10, Herrera led the Miners offensively and defensively as she hammered out a match high 1¬9 kills while posting 15 digs. The middle blocker also contributed four blocks (2s/2a) to secure 22 points for UTEP.

Securing her fourth double-double of the season, Patterson added power to UTEP’s effort on the court with a match high 44 assists and 18 digs.

In true rivalry tradition, both squads fought point for point in the first set tying the score nine times. With the score knotted up at 18, a kill by Taylor Nix sparked a 6-2 run for the Miners. UTEP captured the first set off a kill by Herrera.

The competition continued into the second set as the teams went point for point, but two consecutive UTEP errors gave the Aggies a 7-5 lead. Six more Miner errors would give the set to NM State.

The Miners match the Aggies’ momentum in the third set tying the score at 16 but once again two back-to-back UTEP’s errors gave NM State just enough room to steal the set with a four point lead.

The Aggies would go on to secure the final stanza as they held the Miners to a .167 hitting percentage and only nine kills.

After a four-match road swing the Miners will close out their regular season back at home for Senior Weekend as UTEP takes on Tulsa on Friday at 7 p.m. (MT) and East Carolina on Sunday at 12 p.m.
