UTEP Volleyball Sweeps Marshall, 3-0
Xitlali Herrera and Jeane Horton combined from 31 kills and led a UTEP (19-11, 9-8) attack that hit .368 en route to a 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-19) victory over Marshall on Sunday at Memorial Gym.
Herrera hit a team-best .542 and Horton hit .368 as a powerful offensive attack led past the Herd. Malia Patterson registered a double-double, tallying a match-high 41 assists and 10 digs, while Stephanie Figueroa anchored the defense with a match-high 18 digs.
The first set proved to be a battle as neither team would lead by more than four points. The Miners took its largest lead of the set at 14-10 after a kill by Horton, but Marshal responded with a 3-0 run to come as close as 14-13. The teams would trade points until two-straight kills by Horton gave UTEP a 24-21 advantage. The Herd fought back to tie the set at 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26, but an attack error by Abby Tomas and a kill by Bridget Logan sealed the set for UTEP, 28-26.
UTEP jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but Marshall came out to tie the set at 5-5 with a kill by Sacha Byousmcconnell. UTEP was unstoppable going on a 5-1 run with a trio of kills by Horton taking a 16-10 advantage. The Miners did not let go of the lead for the remainder of the frame, hitting a match-high .531hitting percentage. A kill by Horton closed the set, 25-19.
Both teams battled for control early in the third set and found themselves tied at 10-10 after an attack error by Desirre Wilkerson. UTEP went on a 4-2 run to take a 14-12 advantage with a attack error by Marshall. Marshall got as close as 21-19 with a service error by Marie-Therese Joyce, but the Miners finished the set on a 4-0 run with back-to-back kills by Logan and Herrera to win 25-19.
The Miners will travel to Dallas, Texas on Friday, Nov. 18 to take on SMU at 6 p.m. (MT).
