Sports
Sunday, October 2, 2011 - 6:02pm

Jeane Horton hammered a team-best 11 kills and hit a .233 clip as the UTEP volleyball team powered past East Carolina 3-0 (25-23, 25-23 and 25-14) on Saturday in Greenville, N.C.

Xitlali Herrera had an outstanding performance, posting a match-high six blocks. Herrera also registered 10 kills, 11 digs and a .217 hitting percentage.

Stephanie Figueroa also chipped in a stellar defensive performance, posting 17 digs for the match.

The Miners came out swinging in the first frame, with a pair of kills by Jacqueline Cason and one Pirate attack error gave UTEP the 4-0 advantage to open the set. The UTEP squad took advantage of a series of Pirate errors to go ahead of the Pirates 12-7. East Carolina took control of its offense, at 20-17, as a kill by Hannah Allgood, alongside two UTEP attack errors and a ball handling error, tied the set at 20-20. The Miners called a timeout with just enough time to regroup and take charge of the set. An attack error by Amanda Lutzow gave UTEP a 25-23 victory.

UTEP carried the momentum into the second stanza, with back-to-back blocks by Herrera to give the Miners a 4-1 lead. UTEP pulled another string together with a pair of kills by Jeane Horton and Marie-Therese Joyce to lead the Miners, 8-4. A block from Kelly Derby and Lutzow gave ECU a 13-12 lead. The Miners did not relent, as Patterson led UTEP with an assists and a kill to put the Miners ahead by two, 18-16. Both teams battled for control but Figueroa sealed the set 25-23 with a service ace.

The Miners ran away with a 3-1 run to open the set. The two teams swapped points until the Miners held a five-point edge at 8-13 with a kill by Herrera. The Orange and Blue were just too much for the Pirates, as the offense enjoyed a 6-1 run to go ahead 11-21. A ball handling error by the Pirates ended the set at 25-14.

The Miners return home on Friday, Oct. 7 to face Memphis at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
