UTEP Volleyball Claims Crown at Cornell Invitational EL PASO – The UTEP volleyball team continued to dominate in 2011, moving to a flawless 8-0 after a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-18) sweep of Delaware State to claim the Cornell Invitational title in Ithaca, N.Y.

The Miners opened the day with a 3-1 victory of American to go 4-0 at the tournament. The Miners remain in first place in Conference USA and will look to carry its momentum into next weekend’s MCM Elegante Invitational in Beaumont, Texas. The Miners will face Baylor, Lamar and Mississippi State.

“The team played hard this weekend,” head coach Ken Murphy said. “We made some improvements in our blocking and passing and were able to control matches for long periods of time.”

The Miners combined 97 kills, 16 aces and 15.5 blocks, 10 of which came from Xitlali Herrera. Herrera averaged 1.43 blocks per set, nine of which were assists. The Mexican native also contributed 19 kills and 15 digs for the Miners.

Junior Bridget Logan led the team with 26 kills (3.71 k/s) including a match-high 16 versus American.

Jeane Horton also had a solid performance with 21 kills on the day. Malia Patterson dished out 80 assists to average 11.43. Stephanie Figueroa registered 33 digs (4.71 d/s).

Herrera garnered tournament MVP while Logan was named to the Cornell Invitational All-Tournament Team.

UTEP vs. Delaware State
Logan posted 10 kills followed by junior Cassandra Burruel with nine kills and three block assists. Setter Malia Patterson paced the offense with 34 assists and added five digs.

UTEP hit .370 for the match and held the Hornets to .182. The Miners totaled 44 kills, 39 assists, 31 digs and 7.5 (13ba/1bs) total team blocks.

UTEP vs. American
The Miners edge American in a close four-set victory with scores of 28-26, 25-13, 19-25 and 25-23.

“American was very good and challenged us,” Murphy said. “We were forced to keep our composure. I think this was a quality win for the team and gave us some confidence going forward.”

UTEP got a complete effort on the offensive end behind its top three hitters. Logan scorched the Eagles hammering 16 kills. Horton and Herrera aided the offensive effort with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Patterson delivered a match-high 46 assists and eight digs.
