UTEP Track & Field to take on Nationally Ranked Texas A&M

The track and field team is prepared to take the track on Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational for the final time before competing at the Conference USA Championships.

The Miners will be taking on the nationally ranked Texas A&M (Men-third and Women-fifth) along with Houston, Rice, TCU, Texas State and Cal State Northridge.

Kicking off the field events for the men will be Andres Estrada, Donovant Grant and Mark Jackson in the long jump at 12 p.m. (MT). Grant currently holds the top mark in the league and the 43rd spot in the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) in the long jump with a jump of 7.32m (24-00.25) registered at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. The senior is followed closely by teammate Jackson, who posted a leap of 7.27m (23-10.25) also recorded at the UNM Classic.

Jackson will also compete in the triple jump, where he is ranked 17th in the nation according to the TFRRS for his performance in Albuquerque, N.M., where he set a mark of 15.59m (51-01.75).

On thetrack, Anthony Wright and Reginald Hinson will be running in the 60m dash prelims. Wright holds the 10th-fastest time in the conference with an altitude time of 6.89 at the New Mexico Classic.

Three Miners (Abiola Onakoya, A-Shawni Mitchell and Carnell Horn) will participate in the 400m in the evening part of the meet. Onakoya finished first at the Classic with a time of 47.72, which ranks fourth in the league.

On the women’s side, Janice Jackson, Aeisha McDavid, Brianna McGhee, Bria Love and Samantha Sharper will be competing in the 60m hurdles. Jackson is ranked 24th in thenation in the event with an altitude time of 8.35 posted at the Miners first meet of the season.

Newcomer Brianna McGhee clocked in a personal-best of 8.44 (@8.46) in the 60m hurdles at last weeks meet. Her time earned her the 44th spot in the national rankings and the fourth spot in C-USA.

On thefield, sophomore Taylor Gunn will be representing the Orange and Blue in the weight throw and shot put set to begin at 1 p.m. the throw has tossed a season best of 12.96m (42-06.25) in the shot put this season. Gunn will be joined by teammate Krystal Flemings in the weight throw.

Both squads will conclude the competition with the 4x400m relay projected to start at around 5:00 p.m.
