UTEP Track and Field Teams Receive NCAA Academic Award
The UTEP 2009-10 men’s indoor and outdoor track and field squads have received the NCAA Public Recognition award given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates.
“We are very proud to be recognized with this honor,” head coach Mika Laaksonen said. “This honor speaks volumes of our academic support system at UTEP that our men’s teams were able to score in top 10% nationally measured with Academic Progress Rates.
“One dropout hurts our APR quite a bit due to smaller-than-average team size, so we can’t make any recruiting mistakes if we want to maintain this status. We will continue to do our best in the future in trying to recognize which prospective student-athletes are a best fit considering academic background and athletic ability.”
The UTEP teams are two of 909 Division I teams recognized this year representing 14% of the 6,385 eligible teams. The two squads join 15 other Conference USA teams honored for the 2009-10 academic year.
Top-performing teams this year posted APR scores ranging from 977 to a perfect 1,000. The most recent APRs are based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
Full APR scores for all teams will be released May 24.
