UTEP Track and Field Athletes Honored by Conference USA
UTEP’s Risper Kimaiyo and Suji Adeniyan have been selected to the 2011 Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic teams voted by the league’s sports information directors.
“This is a great honor for Risper (Kimaiyo) and Suji (Adeniyan),” head coach Mika Laaksonen said. “They are very deserving of their nominations being model citizens on the team by always taking care of their business on and off the field. You can never have too many student-athletes like these two individuals. We are extremely proud of them.”
Kimaiyo is a two-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient majoring in nursing with a 3.68 cumulative GPA. The four-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American finished seventh in the 5k at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She set a new school record in the 5k this season clocking in at 15:48.14 at the Payton Jordan Invitational. She took silver in the event at the C-USA Outdoor Championships and fifth in the 1,500m. Kimaiyo claimed the indoor 5k league title and finished second in the mile and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Adeniyan is part of the 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads that will head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The two-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection is a geology major. He is a two-time Conference USA outdoor champion as part of the relays while finishing second in the 100m and eighth in the 200m.
