UTEP ties Texas Tech in Exhibition
Rising sophomore GK Sarah Dilling was in midseason form by making six saves, and the UTEP soccer team went toe-to-toe with Big 12 member Texas Tech in earning a hard-fought 0-0 tie in an exhibition match at the Sun Bowl Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Miners peppered Texas Tech with five shots on net while also earning a pair of corner kicks during the 70- minute exhibition (two 35-minute halves).
There was a good pace of play early on, with the ball really moving on the Sun Bowl surface. A thru ball from Texas Tech in the ninth minute led to a partial breakaway for but Dilling was well positioned. She cut down the angle and then stoned the Texas Tech player.
UTEP began to assert itself offensively with good spacing, with Pak and Hall hooking up on some give and goes. Tess Hall used an aggressive touch on the right wing, and then laced a shot which forced the Texas Tech netminder to make a diving stop in the 16th minute.
A whistle in the box on the Miners set up a Texas Tech penalty kick but the visiting player’s shot hit the post to keep things scoreless in the 23rd minute.
The Orange and Blue then went on the attack, with the pressure resulting in a very poor pass by Texas Tech. The ball sent the Texas Tech keeper scrambling back to her line in an attempt to tip it out. She couldn’t get there in time but the ball ricocheted off the post. Hall then was robbed on a rebound try in the 26th minute.
Texas Tech mustered the final chance of the period by earning a corner kick, but the Miners took care of business by clearing out the service.
There was some fundamental defense by the Miners to block a shot by Texas Tech in the 38th minute. The ball eventually ended up in the middle of the box where a second shot was whistled wide.
Texas Tech tried a long rang e shot 42nd minute, which skipped in on Dilling. The rising sophomore calmly collected the loose change.
The Miners mounted a charge of their own a few minutes later, with consecutive passes setting up Pak in the box. She took one dribble to compose herself but the shot was just wide in the 48th minute.
A few minutes later it was Brittany Kindzierski doing the honors. She used some fancy dribbling before lacing a left-footed shot which was gobbled up by the Texas Tech keeper.
The visiting side then mounted a push of its own, with a bouncing ball one-timed in on net by a Texas Tech forward. Dilling, though, was there to make the save.
Hall dazzled the fans with a spin-a-rama and then rifled a shot which snuck over the cross bar in the 57th minute.
Dilling delivered her finest save of the match by using her left hand tip a shot from Texas Tech high over the net. The Miners then countered but the shot from Stepanie Sazo was handled.
The teams traded looks late, but neither could find pay dirt.
