Demetris Elia took the field for the Orange and Blue and finished in the top-10 in the hammer throw against the nations best competitors.

The sophomore registered a mark of 59.27m (194-05) in his third attempt of the day in the men’s hammer throw. Elia finished ninth overall in the event out of 16 participants.

On the women’s side, Samantha Sharper ran in the 400m hurdles prelims where she finished fifth in the sixth heat of the day. The senior clocked in a time of 1:04.02 but failed to qualify for the finals.

Looking Ahead
The Miners will resume competition tomorrow at Texas Relays starting with the 4x100m relays at 8:35 a.m. (MT).

While the distance team gets prepared to take the track tomorrow at the Stanford Invitational.

Kicking of the meet for the Miners is Anthony Rotich in the 5,000m set to begin at 9:50 p.m.

The sophomore will be competing against 128 runners that are amongst the top distance runners in the nation. This is the first time this outdoor season that the Kenyan native will be racing in the 5,000m. Rotich qualified for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000m after recording a time of 13:38.58 at the Husky Classic. He earned All-American honors in the event this past indoor season.

Also racing at the meet will be Elphas Maiyo and Elkana Rotich in the 10,000m scheduled at 11:56 p.m.

Maiyo started the season on a high note taking the top spot on the medal stand in the 3,000m with a time of 8:59.13 posted at the UTEP Springtime meet. Rotich finished third in the 1,500m clocking in a time of 4:01.79.

Representing the women’s squad is Risper Kimaiyo in the 10,000m set to start at 10:06 p.m.

The senior will not only be racing in her first 10,000m race but she will also be taking on 77 runners at the meet. The All-American dominated her first meet of the season, crossing the finish line first with a time of 4:43.45 in the 1,500m.
