UTEP Tennis Set to Renew Rivalry Against NMSU
The UTEP tennis team has been on a roll the last few weeks. The Miners (8-6) will aim for their sixth win in a row when they take on I-10 rival NM State(3-7) at 2 p.m. MT at the NM State Tennis Center on Friday.
The Miners have won five matches in a row dating back to Feb. 22 when they beat Illinois State, 6-1. It’s the longest winning streak since the Orange and Blue ran off seven in a row in 2010.
UTEP is coming off a shutout win against Western New Mexico, 7-0, while NM State beat Tarleton State, 5-2.
Junior Rebeca Calvillo has shined at the No. 1 singles spot in 2013. She is 8-0 at that spot with a 12-2 overall dual match record. Juniors Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond have 10 wins each, while senior Martina Trierweiler is 5-2 at the No. 2 singles spot (7-6 overall dual match record).
Their younger teammates have made strides the last few singles matches. Freshman Matilda Rose Tench has won her last three, while classmate Jamie-Leigh Michau broke into the win column for the first time since Jan. 27. Sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko has won her last two matches after losing her first three when she returned from injury in February.
On the doubles side, LeBlond and Vazquez have proved to be the top tandem in 2013 winning 10 of 13 at the No. 2 spot. Calvillo and Trierweiler are 7-6 at the No. 1 spot, which is highlighted by a four-matchwinning streak. The Miners have captured the doubles point in five of the last six matches.
Ros-Polly Nguyen and Annemieke Witte lead the Aggies during the spring sesaon. Nguyen is 7-3 in singles play. She has six wins at the No. 5 spot, while her last win came at the No. 3 position. Witte is 6-3 in singles play, including winning her last four matches. Witte and Denise Van Der Benhave won four matches in doubles play on the No. 2 court.
The Aggies won last years contest, 4-3, and have won nine of the last 12 matches versus the Miners.
