UTEP Tennis to Host Matches Friday
UTEP first-year head coach Mark Roberts will finally have the opportunity to coach his girls on El Paso soil this weekend. UTEP (3-6) will play host to Illinois State (5-2) at the El Paso Tennis Club at 1p.m. MT Friday.
Roberts’ squad has played their first nine matches on the road that included wins over Dominican University, Drake University and South Dakota. But the Miners are in the midst of a four-match losing streak, all by one point. The Redbirds head to the Sun City after victories against Colorado State and Creighton.
The Miners have had recent success at doubles play, most notably in their last two matches. Losses to Pacific and New Mexico had the Miners in great position after getting the doubles point before heading into singles play. But inconsistency plagued the Orange and Blue that led to four singles losses each match.
Juniors Marie LeBlond and Gabi Vazquez have led the squad posting a 7-2 record during doubles play, while freshman Jamie-Leigh Michau and sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko have teamed up to win their first two doubles matches. Sylenko has played the last two matches after returning from injury. Michau played alongside fellow freshman Matilda Rose Tench before Sylenko’s return.
Junior Rebeca Calvillo has played exceptionally well posting a 7-2 record during singles play. The native of Durango, Mexico is 3-0 when playing at No. 1 singles. Senior Martina Trierweiler, Vazquez and LeBlond have each won fivesingles matches.
The Miners complete the weekend against Lamar at 9 a.m. MT Sunday. The match will be free admission in conjunction with the 2013 National Girls and Women in Sports Day festivities. Food will be provided before the match.
Roberts and the UTEP family welcomed Michau and Tench in early January. Both had early success to begin the spring season as they recorded victories against Dominican University in both singles and doubles play.
The two teamed up to win two matches during doubles play, but struggled to findwins in their singles matches during the season.
Michau is a native of Cradock, South Africa and Tench hails from Melbourne, Victoria.
