UTEP Takes Two More Titles at Drake Relays

Des Moines, Iowa – Mark Jackson and Janice Jackson posted first place finishes in the final day of Drake Relays.

Mark Jackson jumped in the final heat of the men’s triple jump that featured the world’s elite jumpers. The junior posted the third-best mark in the nation with a personal best mark of 16.19m (53-01.50) set in his fourth attempt on the evening.

“I got a 53 so I feel pretty good,” said Mark Jackson. “This was the first time I have jumped in about a month and I progress on every jump so it feels good.”

Conference USA Champion, Janice Jackson dominated the race from start to finish. The junior clocked in a season-best time of 13.26 in the 100m hurdles earning her first crown at Drake Relays. Layne Baggett from Miami was the runner-up with a time of 13.47.

“I was definitely motivated by the shuttle hurdle disqualification this morning,” said Janice Jackson. “My coach told me that we only have to focus on one thing, which is sprinting, no matter what happens, just sprint and that’s what I really tried to go out and do today.”

The Miners took a total of four titles at the annual meet, previously winning in the women’s 5,000m and the men’s distance medley relay.

El Paso native Jallycia Pearson concluded the meet with an 11th-place finish in the triple jump. In the sophomore’s third and final attempt of the morning, she posted a leap of 11.62m. The next time out the C-USA bronze medal winner will challenge the leagues top jumpers.

The women’s team concluded the meet with the 4x100m relay finals. The relay team featured Brianna McGhee, Yolanda Suggs, Janice Jackson and Magen Del Pino. The Miners took on a tough field that included Illinois, Ohio State, Georgia, Nevada, Mississippi, Indiana State and Minnesota. The squad crossed the finish line in fifth place with a time of 45.01. Illinoistook the title with a winning time of 44.28.

Wrapping up the meet on the track was Elkana Rotich in the 1,500m run. The junior registered a season-best time of 3:49.04 finishing in sixth place.

Bobcat Classic
San Marcos, Texas – Senior Donovant Grant finished on top in the triple jump at the Bobcat Classic. In what proved to be a challenging meet due to rain.

The jumper took first place in the triple jump with a mark of 15.09m set in his third attempt of the night. Freshman Brandon Moss tookeighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.96m and finished ninth in the long with a jump of 6.90m posted in his fourth effort.

In the men’s 200m dash Kristian Dillard was the second collegiate runner to cross the finish line recording a time of 21.55. Anthony Wright was fourth collegiate runner to dash by with a time of 21.58.

Jackline Ekai highlighted the full day of competition for the Miners in the women’s 1,500m. The junior finished second overall in the event with a personal-best time of 2:11.05. Teammate Mariah Bowers crossed the finish line fourth with a time of 2:12.13.
